Summary

Oliver is an orphan living on the dangerous London streets with no one but himself to rely on。 Fleeing from poverty and hardship, he falls in with a criminal street gang who will not let him go, however hard he tries to escape。

One of the most swiftly moving and unified of Charles Dickens’s great novels, Oliver Twist is also famous for its re-creation–through the splendidly realized figures of Fagin, Nancy, the Artful Dodger, and the evil Bill Sikes–of the vast London underworld of pickpockets, thieves, prostitutes, and abandoned children。 Victorian critics took Dickens to task for rendering this world in such a compelling, believable way, but readers over the last 150 years have delivered an alternative judgment by making this story of the orphaned Oliver Twist one of its author’s most loved works。

Long, dark tale - too much other characters other than Oliver himself。 Not the best Dickens。

I love this story! I have always loved the movie versions of this story, and the musical, "Oliver!" but they are very shortened and different。 The narrator for this audiobook was excellent and very pleasant to listen to! His voice kept me very engaged。 I would highly recommend this version。 I love this story! 2。5*I wanted to love this so much and honestly, it was just a slog to get through。 Everyone loves Charles Dickens and puts him on par with Jane Austen (whom I adore) but I just didn't feel it with this novel。 I enjoyed his sardonic writing and thought that his portrayal of the London underground was fascinating, but that was the only thing I liked about the novel。 This might just be a me thing, but I had to check a dictionary every page and the writing style was a bit hard to follow along with。 2。5*I wanted to love this so much and honestly, it was just a slog to get through。 Everyone loves Charles Dickens and puts him on par with Jane Austen (whom I adore) but I just didn't feel it with this novel。 I enjoyed his sardonic writing and thought that his portrayal of the London underground was fascinating, but that was the only thing I liked about the novel。 This might just be a me thing, but I had to check a dictionary every page and the writing style was a bit hard to follow along with。 The characters were all so black and white。 Everyone fits in a box of good/evil neatly except Nancy, who was honestly the only interesting character in the entire novel。 She was raised in the London underground and does morally questionable things that go against all the Christian values that the society stood for at the time and seeing her struggle over her loyalties to Bill and what she believes is right was fascinating。 Granted, this is a children's book so I'll give it a little leeway over the bland characters, but if I have to read one more page about Oliver's gratefulness or goodness I'll scream。 Overall, I did not enjoy this book as much as I wanted to。 The writing style was a bit hard to follow along with and I was never really invested in the plot or the characters。 I might try some of other of Dicken's work since I heard that Oliver Twist isn't his best novel, but I'll definitely be going into it with lower expectations。 。。。more

3。50 Stars (Rounded ⬆️) — Dickens。 Not a whole lot I can add to this Classic tale other than to say it’s Dickens ie it’s good。 Well crafted, verbose and multi-faceted characters that are grounded & unearthed in such a seamless fashion it really is quite a marvel even knowing it’s the great man’s work。 One of my favourite narratives of all-time insofar as it relates to a positive, good character-affirming manner & provides children with a lovely principle for grit, inclusion & most of all, the im 3。50 Stars (Rounded ⬆️) — Dickens。 Not a whole lot I can add to this Classic tale other than to say it’s Dickens ie it’s good。 Well crafted, verbose and multi-faceted characters that are grounded & unearthed in such a seamless fashion it really is quite a marvel even knowing it’s the great man’s work。 One of my favourite narratives of all-time insofar as it relates to a positive, good character-affirming manner & provides children with a lovely principle for grit, inclusion & most of all, the importance of earnestly pursuing your place in a crazy, hard, charmed & downright idiotic world we live in。Holds up to time as well as any Novel written。 。。。more

3。5/5 stars。 A reread for me, and it was so much better than last time! I love to think that this book helped poor people and orphans when it came out, which makes the story even better。 I don’t however enjoy Dickens description of Jewish people (with Fagin in mind)。 I read mine in Swedish, in an edition from 1951, and Fagin was mostly mentioned as ”the Jew”。 Other than that, I enjoyed the book。

Life is filled with ups and downs like the life of the main protagonist of the novel。 This book describes the life of Oliver and also shows us how was the life in London in the 19th century。 Wonderful classic that everyone should read。

Oliver Twist was the very first book I've ever read in English (English isn't my first language) and the very first book that wasn't a school book。 I remember stealing it from my father's library when I just turned 10 years old and reading it in one go。 It's my all time favorite, I have it in both Arabic and English。 And it just holds a very special place in my heart, I've read it more than twice and I don't think I'll ever stop reading it。 The story is quite remarkable and my all time favorite。 Oliver Twist was the very first book I've ever read in English (English isn't my first language) and the very first book that wasn't a school book。 I remember stealing it from my father's library when I just turned 10 years old and reading it in one go。 It's my all time favorite, I have it in both Arabic and English。 And it just holds a very special place in my heart, I've read it more than twice and I don't think I'll ever stop reading it。 The story is quite remarkable and my all time favorite。 。。。more

I know it’s not something I should or could seriously judge, as Rilke says, “Nothing touches a work of art so little as words of criticism: they always result in more or less fortunate misunderstandings……。A work of art is good if it has arisen out of necessity。 That is the only way one can judge it。” And Dickens, being the artist he is, most undoubtedly brought forth this art from the most natural necessity。 So I can’t criticise it and my judgement has no solid substance that could take anything I know it’s not something I should or could seriously judge, as Rilke says, “Nothing touches a work of art so little as words of criticism: they always result in more or less fortunate misunderstandings……。A work of art is good if it has arisen out of necessity。 That is the only way one can judge it。” And Dickens, being the artist he is, most undoubtedly brought forth this art from the most natural necessity。 So I can’t criticise it and my judgement has no solid substance that could take anything away from it。 However, my opinion on Dickens works is that although I appreciate it for what it is, and for it’s uniqueness, his style of writing just doesn’t resonate with me。 I feel no connection to his stories, and the way he forms them makes them feel very superficial。 To me, he expresses things in a very facetious way; like he’s making fun of the entire thing or it’s all a big joke。 I wish this wasn’t the case for me because the themes Dickens addresses are extremely important but I can’t seem to understand the moral lessons he’s getting at unless I read an analysis of his books。 Honestly, I enjoy reading analysis’ and overviews of Dickens novels more so than the actual thing。 His art obviously touches a lot of people though, and I respect that, because his talent is phenomenal, I just find it difficult to grasp any meaning in his stories。 。。。more

Oliver Twist is an orphan, his mother dying right after childbirth。 Oliver, growing up in a parish orphanage then getting sold to a coffin maker, runs away and falls into the criminal underworld (basically) with a group of thieves, headed by the ‘villain’ Fagin。 Oliver then meets other people along the way who show him such empathy and love - Mr Brownlow, Rose and Mrs Maylie for example。 It really is a story about love and family as well as finding your family and a place where you belong。The en Oliver Twist is an orphan, his mother dying right after childbirth。 Oliver, growing up in a parish orphanage then getting sold to a coffin maker, runs away and falls into the criminal underworld (basically) with a group of thieves, headed by the ‘villain’ Fagin。 Oliver then meets other people along the way who show him such empathy and love - Mr Brownlow, Rose and Mrs Maylie for example。 It really is a story about love and family as well as finding your family and a place where you belong。The ending was so satisfying and wonderful。 I feel like I’ve tabbed and underlined entire pages because the portrayal of love and family was so beautiful and lifted off the page。 So I adored Oliver Twist。 I still think that the pacing was a bit off - the last 60ish pages so many things happened and I wish we had more time to see the aftermath of certain events instead of it happening off page and referred to。 (SPOILER 🚨: like I wanted to see the aftermath of Nancy’s death for example。 I wanted to know who found her, the immediate reactions of the people who knew her and then how Oliver found out。 Nancy was so important to the story, in my opinion, that she deserved more!) I also had a slight issue with the character of Fagin。 I need to look into it a bit more, but the way that he was described, in terms of his physical appearance as well as his personality and nature, it seemed anti-Semitic。 Like, in some scenes it was written as if he was the way he was because he was Jewish。 I don’t know - maybe I was reading too much into it? I have to do a bit of research。 There was also an instance (I think only one!) of a character using the n word。 。。。more

I didn't need an audiobook to read alongside and I didn't need to force myself to pick this up or force myself to finish it。 It wasn't fantastic; there was a lot of anti-semitisms included which was jarring to read (although in the footnotes provided, it was mentioned that a guy that he had sold his house to was a Jewish man and Dickens found him 'satisfactory, considerate and trusting' and so when this guy's wife started to complain about the not-so-nice Jewish stereotypes, in 1867, he later retracted a lot of mentions of "The Jew"。), but it was by far the best Dickens novel I have read as of yet。 I can see what people love about this book and it has gotten rid of some of my pre-existing bad vibes with Dickens。 Also, there is literally a character named Master Bates and that is really the only reason you need to read it。 。。。more

3-1/2 stars。 Dickens’s second novel is compelling in parts and all over the place in parts。 The opening 70 pages or so are brutal。 The secondary stories and some of the bit characters hint at his future storytelling genius。 And man oh mam does it get convoluted at the end。
